For Those Who Gave Their Lives...
Reading of the 2,000th American military fatality tonight, and seeing that we here in the UK are nearing the 100th British loss, it's hard not to notice the similarities between the soldiers and Rosa Parks, who also died today. Both Parks and the soldiers stepped up the plate and put themselves in harms way: Parks with the knowledge that she could be imprisoned, the soldiers knowing they could be killed. Both refused to back down, and the world is a much better place for it.
Reading the news, I'm reminded of a line from The West Wing (yeah, I know. But they have good writers):
The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight, but every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless.
This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars. God bless their memory, God bless you and God bless the United State of America.
And God bless the people of Iraq, who prove themselves more worthy of the sacrifice with each passing day.

And, for a look at what the Left is making of this, hold your nose and take a look at
DailyKos: "But don't worry, Bush has a plan: give another speech. I'm sure that'll fix Iraq and bring back all those who died based on his lies."
Atrios: "I think now we know Bush really is in charge. He truly thinks that he if he explains the whole Iraq thing one more time the country will be on board. God he's stupid."
Oliver Willis: "Why did these guys have to die? There’s no real answer."
Kevin Drum: "66% of U.S. adults now say President Bush is doing a "poor" or "only fair" job of handling Iraq; 61% say they aren't confident U.S. policies in Iraq will be successful; and 44% believe the situation for U.S. troops in Iraq is getting worse (compared to only 19% who think it's improving)."
Matthew Gross: "And the question remains-- why? Not for WMDs. Not for oil (output is far lower than before the war). Not for "democracy." Not for the war on terror-- we've created more terrorists and more terrorism. For what?"
Hullabaloo: "Thirty-four years old."
Lean Left: "All this from the wrong war, against the wrong enemy, for reasons that at best were delusions and more often were lies."
Some people will never appreciate sacrifice and some people (like you) do.
